Christopher Dock immigrated to North America in the early 1700's. A man of Mennonite faith, he opened a school for children along Skippack Creek, north of Philadelphia. Later in life, encouraged by friends to share his wisdom, he crafted an article that detailed his standards of behavior. A Hundred Necessary Rules of Conduct for Children, published in 1764 in the German Geistilches magazine, is notable for being our first known original document on the subject of etiquette written in the colonies.
